JTC 1/SC31 - Automatic Identification and Data Capture Techniques
ISO/IEC/JTC1/SC31 is the most important group GS1 is involved in. ISO/IEC JTC1/SC31 is focused on Automatic Identification and Data Capture (AIDC). The secretariat for ISO/IEC JTC1/SC31 is provided by GS1 US (through the American National Standard Institute) and many GS1 Member Organisations take part in this process at all levels. ISO/IEC JTC1/SC31 also has formal links to regional standards bodies such as the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN).
The chairperson and several Officer Positions are provided by GS1 personnel.

ISO/TC122 – Packaging
ISO/TC122 deals with Standardization in the field of packaging with regard to terminology and definitions, packaging dimensions, performance requirements and tests.
GS1 is involved in TC122 working group 4, Bar code symbols on unit loads and transport packages, and working group 7, Linear bar code and two dimensional symbols for product packaging. In addition GS1 participates in a Joint working group between ISO/TC 122 and ISO/TC 104 dealing with Supply Chain Applications of RFID.

ISO/TC154 - Processes, data elements and documents in commerce, industry and administration
This committee is responsible for International standardization and registration of business, and administration processes and supporting data used for information interchange between and within individual organizations and support for standardization activities in the field of industrial data. It is responsible for the EDIFACT and the XML standard syntaxes.
The chair of ISO/TC 154 is held by a GS1 staff person.

ISO/TC215 - Health informatics
ISO/TC 215 deals with Standardization in the field of information for health, and Health Information and Communications Technology (ICT) to achieve compatibility and interoperability between independent systems. Also, to ensure compatibility of data for comparative statistical purposes (e.g. classifications), and to reduce duplication of effort and redundancies.
GS1 is a formal liaison to the Committee and particularly active in working group 6 dealing with Pharmacy and medicines business. There are currently about 10 normative documents in process, most of them in the area of medicinal product registration, vigilance, etc., involving manufacturers, health authorities, IT solution providers.

ISO/TC46 - Information and Documentation
ISO/TC46 addressed Standardization of practices relating to libraries, documentation and information centres, publishing, archives, records management, museum documentation, indexing and abstracting services, and information science.
This committee includes responsibility for the ISBN, ISMN and ISSN standards, which specify identification systems for respectively books, sheet music and serial publications (newspapers and magazines), which are fully compatible with the GS1 Global Trade Identification Number (GTIN).

E-Business MoU Management Group
A Memorandum of Understanding was agreed between ISO, IEC, ITU and UN/CEFACT. The purpose of the MoU is to minimize the risk of divergent and competitive approaches to standardization, avoid duplication of efforts and avoid confusion amongst users. The MoU Management Group comprises representatives from the relevant ISO, IEC, ITU and UN/CEFACT. It also includes the following international user group representatives: NATO CALS, CALS International, SWIFT, OASIS, OAGI, CEN/ISSS, UPU and GS1.
