Improved traceability with GS1 standards at French hospitals

The instruments at Robert Ballanger Hospital carry a GS1 GTIN encoded in a DataMatrix barcode that is scanned in the Operating Room for traceability. The Coulommiers Hospital uses GS1 identifiers and barcodes in the reception and distribution of stable blood derivatives. The medication’s barcode is scanned at reception and the nurse scans it at the bedside. This activity was extended to the reception of cytotoxic drugs. In the future the ultimate goal is to continue improving patient safety by being able to scan at each step of the process—prescription, distribution, transport, storage and the administration of the medication.
