Product Director– Traceability and Provenance



Reports to: 

President, Global Solutions

Position Summary: 

  • This job may manage external and internal relationships and have responsibility for directing external committees or other groups.

    The Product Director – Traceability and Provenance has full responsibility for the vision, strategy, coordination and execution of development work on topics related to Traceability Solutions for GS1. Typical development work can include the creation of Standards, Guidelines, services, training, marketing and Certification Programmes.

    He/she will collaborate with functional personnel and industry groups. The work is expected to include managing and overseeing the functioning of diverse groups of Industry, Academia and GS1 Member organizations, providing expert input on pertinent business practices, technology implementations, the existing GS1 system and the evolution of the GS1 System to support the future business needs of the global Community.


  1. Responsible for the development and maintenance of a Traceability and Provenance Strategy

  2. Transform selected industry needs into a GS1 solution concept and package a potential or existing set of standards, guidelines and/or services that will meet these needs

  3. Conduct feasibility studies, pilots or deliver prototypes as necessary to support for new potential Solutions

  4. Initiate, oversee and contribute to the development of standards, services and guidelines to deliver “ready to deploy” Solutions to enable MOs to go to market

  5. Coordinate development of Solutions across GS1 departments and with the relevant external community

  6. Manage risk and project economics including planning and budgeting, defining deliverable content, and ensuring buy-in of proposed solutions from all constituents

  7. Coordinate operational activities, run team and resources as allocated, maintain business plan and report progress concerning execution to GS1 Global Solutions President

  8. Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with all Industry Engagement sector leads

  9. Collaborate with team members and stakeholders to drive deliverable development and ensure Strategy objectives are achieved

  10. Report to governance groups as necessary

  11. Assess problems critically, structure analyses, apply analytical frameworks, and conceptualize strategy development

  12. Share expertise with team members through development and delivery of case studies, white papers, learning materials, and other resources to elevate knowledge of solutions, standards, and systems

  13. Maintain awareness of industry best practices and business levers for solution offering(s)

  14. Support global users or specific projects as defined per Solution program

  15. Coordinate activities and organize the sharing of information among GS1 national organizations directly or via a Solution team

  16. Oversee the development and maintenance of the necessary technical and marketing material to support best-in-class certification program deployment.


Skills required: 


Requirements include:

  1. 15-20+ years experience with major global industrial companies (CPG, healthcare, etc.) or Solutions Providers, with 10+ or more years supply chain and demand chain experience related to product, services, solutions and standards

  2. Extensive experience in the field of product traceability

  3. Awareness and understanding of the business drivers of Traceability solutions (specifically in the areas of product recall, anti-counterfeit, consumer transparency, provenance, sustainability, and food safety).

  4. Deep understanding of the creation and implementation of solutions designed to address business needs Excellent diplomatic and communication skills,

  5. Ability to effectively communicate with both highly-technical and non-technical persons,

  6. Ability to communicate complex ideas clearly at an executive level, with excellent written and oral presentation skills

  7. Highly-structured and conceptual mind-set, coupled with strong quantitative and analytical problem-solving skills

  8. Exceptional interpersonal and leadership skills within a team environment

  9. Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously

  10. University degree required, Business or Analytical field preferred

  11. Fluency in English, oral and written is mandatory

  12. Strong Microsoft Office suite skills: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint (Visio and Access are pluses)


  • Experience across eCommerce landscape (‘Brick & Mortar’ through ‘omni-channel’ markets)

    Travel Requirements

    This job may require up to 30% global travel.
