eCom Standards Development

eCom Standard development

Any development of a new GS1 standard or any modification to an existing standard follows a rigorous, well-documented change management procedure: Global Standards Management Process (GSMP).

All developments are done in response to a Work Request (WR) that can be submitted by any company, member of GS1. Each Work Request is processed following the GSMP procedures, based on user requirements. Each step of GSMP Development Process includes a validation with industry of the importance of the proposed change and the users’ commitment to implement it. When the final solution is created, it is thoroughly checked for compatibility with the entire set of GS1 standards and is approved by the users who have helped define the requirements and made a commitment to implement them.

Users should be aware that any modifications are done ONLY to the latest version of the standard. No additions or changes to the earlier versions will ever be accepted.

User companies are advised to contact their respective GS1 Member Organisation before submitting any Work Request to the system, to make sure that the WR is:

  • submitted correctly
  • actually required
  • not already resolved using another solution
