Work Groups (WG)

AIDC Healthcare Implementation Guide Work Group

Currently additions and changes to the GS1 General Specification to accommodate the automatic identification and data capture (AIDC) marking and labelling of Healthcare products with the specific focus on patient safety are in the final stages of development within the GSMP system based upon the business requirements previously gathered by the GS1 Healthcare AIDC Application Standards Work Team as part of their Phase 1 work. This group is being formed to create a globally adaptable guideline for the implementation of this AIDC Application Standard for Healthcare.

BarCodes & EPC Interoperability Requirements Work Group

In 2008 the GS1 Architecture Group formed a Parsing Sub Group to investigate interoperability issues associated with the standards and implementation for bar codes and EPC. Building upon the recommendations in the 9 January 2009 report Interoperability between Bar Codes and EPC - Board Committee for Standards, a project was launched to manage the implementation of the recommendations.
The objective of the Bar Codes & EPC Interoperability Requirements Work Group is to gather and analyze business requirements for use cases that require interoperability among the GS1 data carriers and their supporting infrastructure. This shall be done from a multi-sector perspective.
Meeting Dates:Every 2nd & 4th Thursday of the month
Meeting Times 08:00 – 10:00 ET, 14:00 – 16:00 CET
Process Manager: Tom Heist
Community Room: BarCodes & EPC Interoperability Requirements Work Group

Blood Derivatives Work Group

Plasma derivatives are currently in a kind of “grey zone”, some of the suppliers identifying them with GS1 keys and attributes, some identifying them with ISBT 128 keys and attributes, some providing no AIDC solution at all. To compensate variety of AIDC solution on the products, many users have to re-label –which is a possible source of errors and considered as inefficient. This situation is not only inefficient but put patients at increased risks. The working group will:

  • Identify current business processes that new functionalities can improve.
  • List, understand and validate business requirements from each party in the supply chain, including the care giver.
  • Collaborate with ICCBBA to secure product identification without gap and with full interoperability.
  • Deliver guidance on labelling requirements for the products in scope of the present change request.

Meeting Dates: Every 2nd & 4th th Tuesday of the month

eCom Intelligent Packaging Work Group

An industry group has expressed a need to develop global standards to aid the communication of package label content.  This communication typically happens between a manufacturer/ supplier and their packaging design vendors.  Currently, various processes are utilized to handle this communication and can be rather cumbersome at times
There is also a need to share package label content with downstream recipients of the products (e.g. eRetailers, Retailers, Distributors, and Brokers).  These recipients would like to have electronic access to the information as it would greatly enhance their marketing efforts in relation specifically to, but not limited to, electronic commerce applications.
Meeting Times: 2nd & 4th Monday of the Month from 09:00–11:30 EDT / 15:00-16:30 CET00am to 08:30am ET (Princeton), 15:00-16:30 CET (Brussels)

Fresh Foods Standards Work Group

Fresh Foods has become a global supply chain. Retailers and suppliers face numerous issues including local regulations relating to food safety and tracking and traceability, brand wnership of the products sold at Point-of-Sale (POS), and supply chain cost pressures. There’s increasing pressure for the industry to implement solutions that will ultimately change how fresh foods are marked, labeled and sold today. Additional data at POS will create supply chain efficiency and bottom line improvement for all GS1 members.

The 2008 GS1 Fresh Foods Identification Strategy calls for fresh variable measure food products to migrate from current Restricted Circulation Numbers (RCN’s) to a Global Trade Item Number (GTIN). RCN’s do not provide brand owner information at POS.

This Call-to-Action is seeking stakeholders in the following fresh food sectors: Produce, Meat and Poultry, Seafood, Deli/Dairy/Bakery, along with participants from Foodservice, Grocery Retail and Fresh Food Trade Associations.

Multiple BarCodes Work Group

This group is being formed to assess the impact of the move toward multiple BarCodes on one end-user package to make it easy for humans and machines to use BarCode technology in supply chain and mobile commerce applications.  Some examples of the problems that could occur are:

  • a consumer mobile scanning a code designed for back-end processing
  • a POS scanner reading a code designed for consumer mobile scanning
  • hospital users unsure which code to read due to multiple bar codes fulfilling regional requirements

The main objectives will be:

  • to identify potential solutions to support FMCG, Healthcare, internal, and mobile commerce applications and then standardize those solutions
  • to support all business requirements with as few data elements as possible in the bar codes (data carriers) so our membership will be able to use as few data elements as possible
  • to support all business requirements using as few bar codes (data carriers) as possible so our membership in order to get that data into as few data carriers as possible
  • to make it obvious to consumers, end users, caregivers, etc. which bar code on the package is THEIR bar code
  • to make it obvious to machines which bar code is their bar code of interest 􀂃

The output focus is twofold, a standard on which data carrier to use (when and how) looking for the best solution at the global level, independent of current legacy

  • a standard solution to avoid dual or triple carriers on a package (wherever possible one bar code symbol and not two or more).
  • Though EPC / RFID is also a data carrier, this group will not address guidelines for how EPC / RFID tag data shall be represented for optical or human reading or tag data representation as this is an interoperability discussion and should be dealt with as part of another existing project (the Integrated Architecture PDD).

Meeting Dates: Every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the Month

Patient & Care Giver Work Group

The care delivery process involves a series of Automatic Identification and Data Capture (AIDC) mechanisms to uniquely identify the patient, the care giver and the healthcare product(s) at the delivery of care to assure patient safety. Global standards are being created for the uniform AIDC marking and labeling of healthcare products. The objective of this work group is to complete the standards for identification and marking/labeling for the patient and care giver to enable AIDC applications for the care delivery process as well as unique patient identification for other purposes, such as Individual  Electronic Health Records (IEHR). To complete the tasks of the change request, the work group will

  • Gather patient and care giver identification requirements
  • Perform a gap analysis against the current GS1 System Standards
  • Recommend a uniform identification solution
  • Recommend a uniform AIDC marking/labeling solution
  • Develop any necessary enhancements to the GS1 General Specifications
  • Provide implementation recommendations to the GS1 Healthcare Leadership Team

When AIDC can be used at the bed side of the patient, in the operating theatre and at other points throughout the patient care experience, more accurate and timely data capture will allow the 5 Patient Rights: the right patient, right medication/product, right dosage, right route of administration and right time. A unique and unambiguous solution for patient identification will also allow the more effective introduction of electronic healthcare (eHealth) initiatives such as the IEHR.
