Working Groups: Former GSMP Process

The GSMP brings together users from all industries and from everywhere in the world to develop and implement supply chain standards. Our users contribute via the following GSMP Standards Development Groups:f

Work Groups (WG)

  •
      • Gather patient and care giver identification requirements
      • Perform a gap analysis against the current GS1 System Standards
      • Recommend a uniform identification solution
      • Recommend a uniform AIDC marking/labeling solution
      • Develop any necessary enhancements to the GS1 General Specifications
      • Provide implementation recommendations to the GS1 Healthcare Leadership Team

  • Multiple BarCodes Work Group

This group is being formed to assess the impact of the move toward multiple BarCodes on one end-user package to make it easy for humans and machines to use BarCode technology in supply chain and mobile commerce applications.  Some examples of the problems that could occur are:

Patient & Care Giver Work Group

The care delivery process involves a series of Automatic Identification and Data Capture (AIDC) mechanisms to uniquely identify the patient, the care giver and the healthcare product(s) at the delivery of care to assure patient safety. Global standards are being created for the uniform AIDC marking and labeling of healthcare products. The objective of this work group is to complete the standards for identification and marking/labeling for the patient and care giver to enable AIDC applications for the care delivery process as well as unique patient identification for other purposes, such as Individual  Electronic Health Records (IEHR). To complete the tasks of the change request, the work group will

When AIDC can be used at the bed side of the patient, in the operating theatre and at other points throughout the patient care experience, more accurate and timely data capture will allow the 5 Patient Rights: the right patient, right medication/product, right dosage, right route of administration and right time. A unique and unambiguous solution for patient identification will also allow the more effective introduction of electronic healthcare (eHealth) initiatives such as the IEHR.

    Product Recall Work Group

Businesses, end users and regulators in various markets around the world have an interest in establishing a common method to recall products at various points of the supply chain. Traceability in Healthcare II

The Work Team's Mission is "To develop a suite of GS1 Global Standards that enable Traceability in Healthcare. A suite that comprises of the process and technical standards necessary to achieve end to end (raw materials to patient care) global supply chain traceability (that is: track forward/downstream and trace backward/upstream).
The suite of process and technical standards will be the foundation for ultimately achieving the GS1 Vision for Traceability in Healthcare through the incremental implementation of traceability systems that enable "Patient Safety, Regulatory Compliance, Supply chain safety and integrity"

Key Clarification Work Group - Disbanded

The Key Clarification Work Group was formed to clarify the role, application and use of the GS1 Keys as defined in the General Specifications. The Work Group was unable to meet the participation minimums outlined in the GSMP Manual for their second Virtual Motion to Progress of their work to Public Review.  According to the GSMP Manual, if a team fails to meet the participation minimums for a second Virtual Motion, the Work Order is withdrawn and the work stops.  During the last conference call of the team, it was agreed that the Work Group should disband and that to progress individual work efforts, a new Work Request should be created for each individual work.
The Chair, Sue Schmid, and I want to thank all of the participants of the Key Clarification Work Group for their valuable input on clarifying the GS1 Keys.  The work completed by the team provides valuable input for further development to further clarify the GS1 Keys.

Serial Number Replacement or Supply WG - Work Completed

The scope of this work group is to develop a comprehensive set of business requirements for how companies deal with the loss of a serialization on an instance of an item. This will include rules for how and when these “re-serializations” can occur and will be the basis for one or more technical solutions that may pertain to barcodes and RFID (note: the technical solution is NOT part of the scope of this group). Further, the group will take a starting point the requirements generated from the GSMP “Missing Identifier Resolution” Work Group.Meeting Dates: Every Thursday

GDSN Books, Magazines, and Publication Extension Work Group

An industry group has expressed a need to develop global standards to aid the communication of package label content.  This communication typically happens between a manufacturer/ supplier and their packaging design vendors.  Currently, various processes are utilized to handle this communication and can be rather cumbersome at times.

There is also a need to share package label content with downstream recipients of the products (e.g. eRetailers, Retailers, Distributors, and Brokers).  These recipients would like to have electronic access to the information as it would greatly enhance their marketing efforts in relation specifically to, but not limited to, electronic commerce applications.

    Process Manager: Jean-Luc Champion

Fresh Foods Standards Work Group - Work Completed

Fresh Foods has become a global supply chain. Retailers and suppliers face numerous issues including local regulations relating to food safety and tracking and traceability, brand wnership of the products sold at Point-of-Sale (POS), and supply chain cost pressures. There’s increasing pressure for the industry to implement solutions that will ultimately change how fresh foods are marked, labeled and sold today. Additional data at POS will create supply chain efficiency and bottom line improvement for all GS1 members.

The 2008 GS1 Fresh Foods Identification Strategy calls for fresh variable measure food products to migrate from current Restricted Circulation Numbers (RCN’s) to a Global Trade Item Number (GTIN). RCN’s do not provide brand owner information at POS.

This Call-to-Action is seeking stakeholders in the following fresh food sectors: Produce, Meat and Poultry, Seafood, Deli/Dairy/Bakery, along with participants from Foodservice, Grocery Retail and Fresh Food Trade Associations.
      Process Manager: Mark Frey
