Overview

What is the GSMP?

The Global Standards Management Process (GSMP) is the global forum for users to bring business needs that require standard based solutions to create a more efficient Supply Chain. Specifically, the GSMP provides a comprehensive set of methods and rules allowing both the GSMP and EPC communities and affected industry groups to submit their needs and lead in the creation of globally agreed standards and guidelines.

What Standards are managed by GSMP?

GSMP is the global standards management process for six types of standards. They include:

  • BarCodes & Identification
  • Electronic Product Code (EPC)
  • Global Data Synchronization Network (GDSN)
  • eCOM (and EANCOM)
  • Global Product Classification (GPC)
  • Traceability
  • Data Accuracy

How Do I Get Involved?

Building standards that improve supply chain efficiency is a collaborative effort among all stakeholders. We need your participation to make it work.

Participation is primarily through teleconferences and some physical meetings. Our work is performed Work Requests (WR). You are encouraged to complete a GSMP application to become a member of a GSMP Group. Once you become a member of a specific group you will receive invitations to our development team conference calls and have access to our repository for standards development work. You are not restricted to a membership in a single GSMP Group.

GSMP standards are global and affect multiple sectors. Your level of participation may vary by change request based upon your organization’s needs without affecting your membership standing.

Once your application is filled out, a GSMP Manager will assist you in getting involved with the group.

What is the Intellectual Property Policy?

The GS1 IP Policy (IPP) seeks to set forth the licensing terms for a ratified standard or Specification. The intent of the IPP is to seek to provide royalty-free licensing of the necessary claims of patents owned by participants in the Working Group in regard to the Specification developed by the Working Group. Many patents exist and are being filed today in areas relevant to requirements, process, and specifications.

What is the GSMP Participation Model?

Governance groups aid in the leadership and operation of GSMP. They provide advice to the Working Groups as well as ensure that the GSMP process is followed, work efforts are prioritized, and conflicts are resolved.

GSMP Working groups bring together users from all industries and from everywhere in the world to develop supply chain standards and implementation guidance.

What is the New GSMP Process?

The GSMP provides a comprehensive set of methods and rules allowing the user community and affected industry groups to submit their needs and lead in the creation of globally agreed standards and guidelines. The GSMP Process Consists of Four Key Steps:

How does the current Governance & Work transition into the new GSMP Process?

As part of the merger of the old GSMP and EPC into the new GSMP, the governance of the old processes will transition to newly formed groups with different roles. The responsibilities of the old structures were mapped to the new structures as part of the “ISDP” exercise and are described in the GSMP Process Manual.
