Dr. Chikayuki Ochiai, M.D., D.M.Sc., is a professor at the Tokyo Healthcare University and an Honorary CEO of the NTT Medical Centre in Tokyo. During his presentation, Dr. Chikayuki said, “In the field of Japanese healthcare, in addition to the patient safety and the improvement of quality, cost efficiency has become an essential issue. If the cost is the same, we should choose the most effective way and if the outcome is the same, we should select the most affordable way. For solving this issue, we believe that it is vital to establish the globally standardised system, making it possible to secure the traceability in the field of healthcare.”
He also introduced the case study from NTT Medical Centre Tokyo where in 2008 they started using, GS1 barcodes during the process of assembly of metal instruments. Now, the medical centre is reading barcodes during the process of assembly and retrieval for all metal instruments.
