How the GS1 GDSN Data Quality Challenge Works

The Five Steps of Phase 1
Phase 1 of the Data Quality Challenge programme has been underway since the beginning of 2008. There are five basic steps:

Step 1: Identify the opportunities that exist internally

  • Understand the specific opportunities for your business

Step 2: Decide to assess your data

  • Establish a collaborative relationship with trading partners
  • Appoint people and allocate resources internally to the Data Quality Challenge programme
  • Reach out to your local GS1 Member Organisation

Step 3: Become familiar with the Data Quality Framework and prepare to use it

  • Participate in a kickoff workshop
  • Ensure that your team is ready to perform the self-assessment procedure

Step 4: Use the Data Quality Framework to perform the self-assessment

  • Define the scope of the self-assessment
  • Plan the self-assessment
  • Conduct the self-assessment
  • Submit feedback about the process

Step 5: Calculate your results and plan improvements

  • Calculate your self-assessment score
  • Identify key areas for improvement
  • Set metrics for improvement
  • Plan the changes and enhancements to processes

As the project progresses, more information and resources will be made available for organisations that wish to collaborate on data quality with their trading partners in this way. When phase 1 has been completed by its participants, the next phases will be set up to implement the opportunities realised.
