Defence - Overview

The Defence Sector is aware of the challenge to improve supply chain management. GS1 is working with this sector to implement commercial standards - GS1 Standards.

The GS1 System has been accepted and implemented into applications used by the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) as well as many national militaries. These organisations have focused on the Global Individual Asset Identifier (GIAI) to manage and control assets and the Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC) to support logistics.

Since 2006 GS1 and NATO have a Technical Co-operation Agreement for their collaborative activities.
