Change Requests

Change Request (CR) is the vehicle for updating the GS1 system of standards. Change Requests are submitted by the GSMP community using our online CR system. Once a Change Request is entered into our system, it receives a CR Number and is then assessed by GS1. Upon prioritization from GS1, a Change Request becomes a GSMP Work Order (WO) and the CR Number becomes a WO Number (Standards development work begins).

For example, if a Change Request is submitted and becomes CO 07-000423, upon approval by GS1 it becomes WO 07-000423.

Once a Work Order is created, GS1 will classify it based on the work effort required and the level of approval needed to assign/prioritize the necessary resources. There are three classifications of Work Orders:

The diagram below shows how Change Requests are routed through the GSMP and become Work Orders.

Simple Work Orders

Simple Work Orders do not require the formation of a work group. User support is required by Simple Work Orders however a Commitment to Implement or Pilot is not. The BRG determines if a Change Request needs to be classified as a Complex Work Order based upon additional findings gained during the development of the standards.

The following Change Requests are typically classified as Simple Work Orders:

  • GDSN Validation Rules that do not impact multiple groups and/or business process
  • GDD Fast Track Attributes
  • Inclusion or exclusion of existing EANCOM or EDIFACT Segments/Data Elements that do not impact business process
  • Addition of new Code List Values that do not impact business process
  • GPC Minor Change (Rules Compliant)
  • Minor change to the General Specifications which can be resolved by the BarCodes & Identification BRG & within Simple CR timing targets (Requires CR submitter to submit recommended changes to the General Specifications in Track Changes mode)

Complex Work Orders

Complex Work Orders require the formation of a work group and are expected to take longer than 136 calendar days to complete. All Complex Work Orders require the completion of a Statement of Work (SOW) or Business Case Document (BCD) that is submitted to the appropriate Business Unit Manager for approval.

The following Change Requests are typically classified as Complex Work Orders:

  • Change to the CIC Response Message to add reason codes
  • Creation of a new transactional message, such as Ocean Booking Request
  • Creation of a new extension for an existing sector, such as Food & Beverage

Project Work Orders

A GS1 Project Work Order is a strategic effort, which requires Board Committee for Standards (BCS) and General Assembly approval to initiate work and enables new functionality or provides a dramatic enhancement to the current functionality provided by the GS1 System. GS1 Projects will be prioritized based upon implementation commitment. All GS1 Projects require the completion of a Statement of Work (SOW) that needs to be submitted to the appropriate Business Unit Manager for approval.
The following characteristics exist for potential GS1 Projects:

  • New functionality added to the existing standards (e.g., Price Standards, RSS)
  • Significant resource level (Could result in multiple work efforts / multiple groups)
  • High implementation impact / level to which business process needs to change
  • On boarding of new sectors
  • Requires significant investments from GS1 for Implementation Support

Submitting a Change Request

Change requests are submitted by using our online Change Request system. You will be asked a series of questions that will help GS1 determine your business needs.

Healthcare User Group (HUG) Change Requests
Individuals involved in the GS1 Healthcare User Group (HUG) should not use the Online form to submit Change Requests. Instead they must fill out a GSMP HUG Change Request form and email it to opsgsmp@gs1.org. If additional information is required, attachment files may be submitted along with the form. Be sure to identify the names of the additional files by listing them in the space provided.
