Position Summary: 

The Director Global Marketing & Data is responsible for developing and implementing the GS1 marketing strategies in the area of data and data services and for the activities of Global marketing (Global brand, Digital Marketing, Global event).
It is expected that the position’s task allocation will be: Data: 50%; Global brand and Digital marketing: 35%; Global event: 15%.
Responsibilities of the position include leading the development of marketing plans and their execution in perfect alignment with MO business plans. He/She will also manage the development and implementation of comprehensive communication programs, and provide MOs with best-in-class marketing materials.
The position will have 3 direct reports, 1 for Data and Global brand, 1 for Digital marketing, 1 for Global event (although that situation could change based on business priorities, people availability or other organizational considerations). These direct reports will be in charge of the execution and operations of their respective activities. The strategic leader of these activities will be the Director Global Marketing & Data, but he/she should also ensure involvement, participation and motivation to the strategic developments by his direct reports.
The Director Global Marketing & Data will be expected to become one of the leaders of the Marketing & Public Policy department and an active and engaged member of the executive management group of Global Office (group formed by CEO N-2 level people), interacting strongly with his/her peers of Data Services, Industry Engagement, Solutions and Standard Development.
The position is based in Brussels and requires approximately 10 to 15 % travel time all over the world.


Specific responsibilities:


Background: “Data” at GS1 means supply chain data standards related to FMCG or healthcare products. It also represents consumer product data standards which can be made available on-line (variant, weight, images, ingredients,…). “Data services” are when GS1 enables or plays an active role in the exchange of data between manufacturers and retailers/e-tailers. While GS1 has been active in the area of data for more than 10 years, we are now launching the most spectacular and strategic initiative in that area to be called “Verified by GS1”.

  • Develop and update every year the Data marketing plan to gain senior management support for strategic initiatives and market development activities
  • Lead the implementation of the Data marketing plan, in full alignment with MO’s engaged in product data and data services
  • Support the MOs in promoting the adoption and implementation of GS1 Data standards and Data services
  • Measure success of all key initiatives against pre-defined objectives to ensure that all new marketing activities will add value
  • Work with business leaders to develop key messages for external or internal communication; develop a communication strategy to inform key stakeholders about data priorities, initiatives, challenges and progress; target audiences include GO personnel, MOs, key End Users, and Solution Providers
  • Manage the creation of all advertising, p-o-s materials, merchandise, marketing literature and related items to company standards and within budgets
  • Manage the related marketing budgets

Global brand and digital marketing

  • Ensure the Global brand GS1 remains one of the core pillars of the GS1 strategy in Acting as One Organization, Speaking with One Voice
  • Continue the development of the Global brand and ensure continuity and further development of the campaign
  • Be the guardian of MO’s compliance with Global brand guidelines
  • Manage the advertising agency in charge of the Global brand
  • Manage the related marketing budgets

Digital Marketing

  • Websites management and GO social media
  • MO web support
  • Digital marketing service to Data, Healthcare, Retail, Event
  • Manage the digital marketing agency in charge of GS1 Global Office digital marketing activities

Global Event

  • Lead the strategic design and programme of the GS1 Global events, in particular Global Forum, General Assembly, Industry & Standards events and Healthcare conferences in order to raise the profile of GS1; and will identify new relevant events and representation opportunities for GS1.
  • Ensure that best practices, cost efficiencies, synergies and visual identity are achieved across other GS1 global events like GS1 Industry and Standards events, Healthcare conferences and Management Boards.
  • Manage the related marketing budgets


  • The “dream candidate”: about 10 years experience in B2C marketing in Fast Moving Goods Company and about 7 years experience in B2C or B2B marketing in a digitally engaged company active in software, social media, data business, computer business or similar activities
  • International profile. Ideally a person who has lived and worked in other countries than country of origin

  • An affinity with the digital world, including the world of “big data” is a plus
  • Mastery of English, in particular written
  • People and team management skills
  • To be based in Brussels, but country of origin can be from anywhere in the world

Soft Skills Requirements:

The following soft skills are essential: strong leadership, strong communication, impact and influence. Creativity and sense to “make things big” will be expected.
But on the other hand, flexibility and diplomacy are also necessary at GS1, being a standard organization and a federated model (as opposed to a hierarchical multinational).
