GS1 develops and maintains the most widely used supply chain standards that are fundamental to numerous enterprises around the world. The best-known symbol of GS1 standards is the barcode, named by the BBC as one of “the 50 things that made the world economy”. Five decades ago, we started by helping food retailers do business more efficiently and reduce consumer prices. Today, GS1 standards improve the efficiency, safety and visibility of supply chains across physical and digital channels in 25 sectors, including healthcare, retail omni-channel and e-commerce, transport and logistics, food service, technical industries and humanitarian logistics. Our scale and reach – local Member Organisations (MO) in 116 countries, 2 million user companies and 6 billion transactions every day – help ensure that GS1 standards create a common language that supports systems and processes across the globe.
Global Migration to 2D Programme
The Global Migration to 2D programme is working toward a near future in which 2D barcodes supersede the well-known 1D barcode, starting with use case prioritised by industry. As with all GS1 activities, global interoperability is paramount throughout. The programme teams will develop a migration path for Industry and Solution Partners to move systematically to an interoperable 2D barcode future.
The key to success of this programme will be choreographing and enabling this change across the various stakeholders around the world. Industry will need to be convinced that the use cases and capabilities enabled by 2D are not only compelling but are mission critical to serving the needs of consumers in the digital world. Solution Providers will need to be confident that there will be adequate demand by industry to justify the development investments that will be required. GS1 Member Organisations will need to be able to engage with their constituents with clarity and confidence. Finally, there will need to be clear communication and measurement on the migration as it begins to signal progress, to justify Solution Partner investment and to motivate all constituents to make the changes needed to meet the needs of the digital consumer.
Working as a part of the GS1 Registries & 2D Programme Team, the successful candidate will be required to undertake a range of activities relating to helping drive awareness, support implementation and track GS1 community/MO and industry progress towards the migration to 2D Barcodes, leveraging GS1 standards, across the industry sectors in which GS1 engages.
