GS1 Overview
GS1 develops and maintains the most widely used identification standards that are fundamental to numerous enterprises around the world. The best-known symbol of GS1 standards is the barcode, named by the BBC as one of “the 50 things that made the world economy”. Four decades ago, we started by helping food retailers do business more efficiently and reduce consumer prices. Today, GS1 standards improve the efficiency, safety and visibility of supply chains across physical and digital channels in 25 sectors, including retail, marketplaces, healthcare, transport and logistics, food service, technical industries and humanitarian logistics. Our scale and reach – local Member Organisations (MOs) in 116 countries, 2 million user companies and 6 billion transactions every day – help ensure that GS1 standards create a common language that supports systems and processes across the globe.

Role Summary
The Technical Writer will create user guides or API specifications for sharing understandable and concise product information helping to increase the user experience with the GS1 Data Services. For improving the GS1 Global Office software development, the Technical Writer will work with the product team on documenting processes as standard operational procedures. Based on their experience, the Technical Writer can adapt the vocabulary and the level of detail in the interests of the target group.


•    Compose material for online applications and agile processes including:
      a.  User Guides (high level quick starter guides or step-by-step manuals)
      b.  Standard Operation Procedures (SOP) 
      c.  Technical Specifications or Reference Manuals (like API specifications)
•    Recognises the targeted audience for the required material
•    Works closely with product management, agile development, and programme teams
•    Joins product planning sessions and product review meetings
•    Collaborates with the Marketing and Customer Service & Training team


  • Bachelor or master’s degree with 5 years of related experience 
  • Experience and passion for composing clear and concise user facing documents (work samples appreciated)
  • Basic level of IT understanding
  • First experience with web-based guides
  • Visualisation skills for explaining complex matters or processes graphically
  • Knowledge of GS1 Standards a plus
  • Retail or Marketplace experience a plus

Skills required:

  • Fluent in English, oral and written is mandatory 
  • Demonstrates passion, energy, and drive in his/her work

  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft PowerPoint, Teams, Excel, Outlook, Word, Zoom.

Additional Information:

Status: Consultant (March 2022 to 30 June 2022, renewable to 30 June 2023)
Part time: 20 hours/week
Travel Requirements: This job will not require global travel.
