CEN chooses GS1 SSCC to identify parcels - Jan Somers on television

Jan Somers, CEO of GS1 Belgium & Luxembourg, interviewed by Kanaal Z on why the decision to use GS1 SSCC is so powerful for business.

Every parcel in the EU will be identified via GS1 SSCC

The CEN (European Committee for Standardization) endorses the GS1 Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC) as end-to-end parcel tracking number. This means every sender will follow the same standard that attributes a unique code to each parcel, independently from which courier service is chosen.

Tracking the parcel’s journey from sender to consumer

When announcing this decision in June, GS1 explained it was about creating an end-to-end delivery network. It is the result of a collaborative effort by representatives from postal organisations, online retailers, couriers, express and parcel service providers. All handlers of the parcel will be able to track the parcel’s journey from sender to consumer and also, back to the sender for a consumer’s return.
