Business trends and the GS1 value chain

Graphics can explain complex phenomena in rather simple ways.

That’s why we really like our business trends / GS1 value chain map. It’s a powerful way to show their relevance to the industries that GS1 serves.

As industries are evolving so fast, we’ve moved beyond the traditional supply chain to include the entire “value chain” and its processes:

  • Upstream – raw materials or ingredient sources
  • Manufacturing – the production or assembly systems to create products
  • Warehouse – storing of products, often in cases or pallets to aid in further distribution
  • Transport – the management of moving goods through the supply chain
  • Retail – the sale of products to end-users or consumers either in a physical store, from an online store, or through an online marketplace
  • Fulfillment – the process of distributing products further downstream direct to consumers, hospitals or other end users
  • Use – any and all ways that products are used, such as consumers connecting products to their Smart Home system or a hospital using pharmaceuticals and medical devices in patient care
  • End of life – includes a variety of scenarios; for example, products that are being disposed of, disassembled, recycled, and even industrial components that are refurbished to re-enter the value chain
