  3. Celebrating a key milestone – 150 million barcode numbers are now part of the GS1 Registry Platform

Celebrating a key milestone – businesses, service providers and governments can leverage Verified by GS1 to verify the identity of over 150 million products

A strong foundation to ensure every product globally can be uniquely identified

Whether in the physical world or digital world of e-commerce, unique and persistent identification of products that can be shared with many stakeholders consistently and accurately is foundational. The GS1 Global Trade Item Number (GTIN), also known as the barcode number, plays a pivotal role in industry’s digital transformation by connecting products to accurate data.

GS1 would like to thank the brand owners and manufacturers who have uploaded over 150 million Global Trade Item Numbers in the GS1 Registry Platform, setting a strong foundation for our goal to compile a record of the most GTINs possible with the highest level of quality and completeness. When all physical products are uniquely identified with a barcode number, products are represented as well in the digital world as they are in the physical world – with benefits to industry such as simplified listings, reduced time to market, more consumer transparency and reduced counterfeiting.

Foundational technology to verify global product identity

To enable industry to access reliable product data to verify global identity, we built the GS1 Registry Platform. Verified by GS1 – a service offered by GS1 – leverages this platform to allow retailers and marketplaces to verify product information and the company name (company or entity who licenced the GTIN) by checking it against the data entered by the brand owner. With a robust database behind it, Verified by GS1 will enable correct identification of items in both the physical and virtual worlds.

Calling all industry stakeholders to leverage the full capabilities of Verified by GS1

Although we are pleased to reach this key milestone, we know this is the start of our journey to ensure the GS1 Registry Platform contains the most GTINs possible, with the highest level of data quality and completeness.

Thanks to all our partners for the work done to date – let’s continue to make progress on this important initiative. We urge retailers and marketplaces to use the data to verify products in their catalogues and ask their brand owner partners to continue to upload GTINs into the registry (via GS1 Member Organisations), focusing on ensuring the data is complete and of the highest quality. As always, GS1 is here with the training, tools and advice to help.

We thank the efforts of the many manufacturers, service providers, retailers and marketplaces, as well as the GS1 Member Organisations who have helped us achieve this milestone and look forward to partnering to grow the GS1 Registry Platform in the years to come.
