Global collaboration between GS1 and SNOMED International

The Collaboration Agreement between GS1 and SNOMED International was updated in April 2016 to ensure that the organisations’ health information standards are complementary and can work together in health systems globally. A key focus has been to develop principles for linking GTINs and SNOMED CT at the national level.

An expert group has drafted principles for use by those implementing such a linkage. The principles have to be used in conjunction with use cases, which illustrate how implementations have been developed on the ground.

The draft principles and use cases have been validated by the GS1 Global Office / SNOMED International Steering Group, which involved GS1 Member Organisations, and are now posted for public use. They should be reviewed and tested by implementers, who are invited to provide feedback within the next 12 months. Any significant feedback will generate prompt updates. A new version will otherwise be released in April 2018.
