Two outstanding winners: compelling case studies and contributions to patient safety

Healthcare provider representatives from The Canberra Hospital in the Australia Capital Territory (ACT) Health, Australia, as well as Aarhus University Hospital, Denmark, were awarded GS1 Healthcare Provider Awards for outstanding implementations of GS1 standards to advance patient safety.

These healthcare providers clearly demonstrated how their implementations of GS1 standards had a compelling impact on their operations—a clear ROI, support for caregivers, and significant improvements in patient care.

The Canberra Hospital, part of ACT Health, is using GS1 standards to ensure that the right blood sample is “matched” with the right patient. Nurses now work more efficiently and with increased accuracy by scanning the barcodes of the patient, clinic notes label and their own ID badge. They also get an alert if the match is not confirmed.

As a result, the hospital has achieved 100% accuracy in the identification of the right patient’s blood in a tube. Looking ahead, The Canberra Hospital plans to use GS1 standards in other information systems and EMRs to close the loop on patient safety.

One of the largest hospitals in northern Europe, Denmark’s Aarhus University Hospital is successfully streamlining processes and care with a foundation of GS1 standards, including GS1’s data sharing standard, EPCIS, for tracking items throughout the hospital.

The hospital has cut the time used to search for personnel and assets by as much as 50% for more timely and safe care. It has also improved its ability to utilise equipment more efficiently. The hospital’s next priority is to establish a location database with GS1 Global Location Numbers, providing information about healthcare locations to all lines of business within the Central Denmark Region.
