The following section outlines the barcode symbol types that shall be used to encode the SSCC.
Note: Some scanning systems may be able to handle 2D barcodes as well as 1D barcodes. In these environments, 2D symbols may be used in addition to linear symbols.
A barcode consists of the barcode symbol, also known as data carrier, and the associated and encoded data value of the identification key printed in the so called Human Readable Interpretation (HRI) below or next to the symbol.
