How to use this guide

The functional user guide is structured as follows:

Description of the main process areas covered by the eCom Business Message Standards, and the role of each message.

2. Message structure – overview
A report containing the main message components, with their definitions, sample data - where applicable, usage rule and external references - where available.
This report has a RTF format, suitable for printing.

  1. 3. Message guideline – detailed
A report containing ALL message components, with their definitions, sample data - where applicable, usage rule and external references - where available.
This report has an HTML format, suitable for viewing on the GS1 website. It allows navigating the message structure, using the structure tree to the left and the structure diagrams.

4. Component Libraries
Information on the generic component libraries that are used in the messages.

5. Identifiers and Actions
Detailed information on the use of GS1 keys and document header details.

Important note on code lists:
in eCom Major Release 3, the majority of code lists are not enumerated in the message, they have been “externalized” and are stored in the Global Data Dictionary and listed in the respective BMS documents. Thus, this guide does not contain the lists of available codes and their definitions, except those that have been enumerated in the message. Instead, a standard text has been included: “Information about the allowed code values for this code can be found in the GS1 Global Data Dictionary: http://gdd.gs1.org/gdd/public/codelists.asp”.
The documentation of future eCom BMS releases will contain the URN to the respective code lists stored in the Global Data Dictionary. The current infrastructure does not support this.
