Global activities
GS1 currently has 5 main global activities:
- Implementation. To further develop our capability to assist consumers, businesses and governments worldwide, we have now defined traceability as a business process and produced the GS1 Global Traceability Standard, which links it to enabling technologies and relevant GS1 System tools. In order to facilitate the implementation of traceability in your business, you can find some implementations guidelines in this web site; otherwise, GS1 is currently developing Traceability started kit for implementation. If you need your business need guideline implementation, please contact the GS1 Office nearest you.
- Conformance and certification. To insure a quality and integrity of the traceability process implemented in the supply chain and companies, GS1 is developing a conformance check list which defines essential elements for the development of best practice for the global production and distribution of trade items. - Healthcare Traceability. The Traceability in Healthcare is being established in support of the GS1 Global Healthcare Roadmap. The work group is a Consortium of participants from the global healthcare sector to bring their expertise, commitment and contributions to the GS1 Healthcare Work Team “Traceability in Healthcare”. The objective is to enables improvement to patient safety, meets national and/or international legal and regulatory requirements, addresses business, technical and interoperability needs. It has been validated against GS1 Global Traceability Standard. If you want to join the group, please contact Janice Kite at janice.kite@gs1.org.
- Fresh Product Traceability. GS1 has launch a work group project to produce an implementation guideline that can be used by any company implementing traceability practices in the fruit & vegetable (“produce”) supply chain anywhere in the world. The Guidelines will identify best implementation practices and will be based on existing GS1 standards, including the Global Traceability Standard. - Global Traceability Work Group. This is platform for all stakeholders involved in the supply chain and in the implementation of traceability. If you need to join the traceability workgroup please contact traceability@gs1.org.
GS1 Traceability around the world

- GS1 Malaysia: The Malaysia Food Information and Traceability (M-FIT) Project
The MFIT Project is a Malaysian Information Hub which links the entire food supply chain from farms right to the consumers. This pilot has been launched in three agriculture sub-sectors: starfruit farming, and prawn and poultry breeding.
- GS1 Hungary: publishes book on traceability
A book entitled “Traceability through Global Standards” was published by GS1 Hungary. The publication contains essential information and concrete case studies for Hungarian companies.
- GS1 China: Beijing Olympic Games Provide Food Traceability Using GS1 Standards
As they prepare to host the Games of the XXIX Olympiad in August 2008, the Chinese government is working in cooperation with GS1 China on food safety
- GS1 Switzerland: Using traceability to fight counterfeit pharmaceuticals
A pilot project in Switzerland involving actors from all points of the healthcare supply chain is set to study using GS1 traceability standards to fight counterfeiting.
- GS1 Netherlands: Demo puts the supply chain in the driver's seat
To increase awareness and understanding of the benefits of standards in the fresh produce supply chain, GS1 Netherlands and long-time partners Frug I Com and AIM Netherlands created an innovative demo.
- GS1 France: French study shows clear business benefits to traceability programs
Beyond ensuring consumers' safety and respecting laws, a recent study commissioned by GS1 France has unequivocally demonstrated that food supply chain traceability programs lead to measurable business benefits and return on investment.
- GS1 Egypt leads agro-food industry with traceability solution
GS1 Egypt cooperated with the Egyptian national center for agro food traceability (E Trace) funded by The United Nations Industrial Development (UNIDO) to assist Egyptian farmers and exporters implement traceability and comply with the requirements of the EU regulation no. EC178/2002.
