Healthcare Provider Advisory Council (HPAC)

GS1 Healthcare is focused on helping hospitals and healthcare providers.

That is why the Healthcare Provider Advisory Council has been created. It consists of thought leaders and early adopters of GS1 Healthcare Standards from the global clinical provider environment to identify projects that support the adoption of GS1 Healthcare Standards in Healthcare institutions and retail pharmacies. Their final goal is to improve patient safety, cost efficiency and staff productivity.

GS1 Healthcare Nurses in Leadership

The purpose of this group is to create an international platform for nurses in leadership to exchange challenges and best practices of practical implementation of GS1 standards in the clinical environment.

HPAC Objectives

  • To be a forum for sharing and discussing the practical realities of implementation of GS1 Standards in the care giving environment in regards to the impact on clinical care and patient interaction
  • To identify projects that support the adoption of GS1 Standards in Healthcare institutions and retail pharmacies
  • To identify best practices and case studies for publication, presentation and sharing 
  • To be a source of expertise and provide feedback and advice to those involved in GS1 standards development, the wider Healthcare stakeholder community and senior executives/decision-makers to gain their buy-in and support for implementation of GS1 Standards

GS1 Healthcare Awards


GS1 Healthcare has introduced two awards for providers organisations or individuals: the "Provider Recognition Award" and "Provider Implementation Best Case Study Award".

The "Provider Recognition Award"

For an individual who has contributed extensively to furthering GS1 Healthcare's work efforts over the years:

  1. Nominated by a GS1 Member Organisation OR Global Office Healthcare OR Industry, with clear justification.
  2. The nominee has implemented GS1 Standards for at least ONE business or clinical process in their hospital/clinic/organisation with clear return on investment (ROI) and/or impact on patient safety.
  3. Nominee is recognised as GS1 standards advocate (locally, regionally or internationally).
  4. Optional: Nominee is active in GS1 standards development work, e.g. participation as member OR (co)-chair in GS1 Global Standards Management Process (GSMP) Work Group(s).

Submission deadlines: 30th June and 31st December each calendar year. 

Prize: Paid trip to the next global GS1 Healthcare Conference and opportunity to present.

The "Provider Implementation Best Case Study Award"

This award focusses on the achievements of the organisation.

  1. The provider organisation or department has implemented GS1 Standards for at least ONE business or clinical process in their hospital/clinic/care home/pharmacy/department with clear and demonstrable return on investment (ROI) and/or impact on patient safety.
  2. Nominated by a GS1 Member Organisation OR Global Office Healthcare OR Industry, withclear justification.
  3. The jury specifically looks also at the possibility of replication.

Submission deadlines: 30th June and 31st December each calendar year.
