Global Standards for Global Health
GS1 Healthcare was pleased to host the 3rd GS1 Healthcare Online Summit, from 15 – 18 November 2021. This event saw 45 speakers from across the world share their expertise, and was designed to bring together all of the global healthcare community. 740 participants from 85 countries heard how GS1 standards can help to improve clinical outcomes and supply processes, how global standards are being used to help secure the supply chain, gain insights about important regulatory developments, and much more!
A starter session
GS1 standards: What you need to know
All you need to know about GS1 standards in action and to address the worldwide challenge of providing better care, with greater efficiency, for every patient.
Day 1
Sessions 1 & 2
The first session focussed on how digital technology and global standards improve clinical outcomes. The second session was divided into two parts with a spotlight on medical device regulation, and then then supplier experience in implementing unique medical device identification.
Day 2
Sessions 1 & 2
On the second day of the summit, delegates learned about exciting progress made in standards implementations. They then heard from healthcare humanitarian and donor organisations, as well as national regulators, about the role of global standards in helping everyone across the globe access authentic, safe medical products.
Day 3
Sessions 1 & 2
On the final day of the summit, regulators and industry shared updates about pharmaceutical regulations. For the final session we discussed why global standards combined with advancing technology will drive change, not only for the patient, but the clinician and healthcare system too.
Focus on Africa
Session on 17th November
This session was an important platform for stakeholders from all around the world to learn about the progress being made by countries in Africa (Ethiopia, Nigeria, Rwanda and Zambia) with regards to adoption and use of global standards to support pharmaceutical traceability and ultimately patient safety. In addition, we had five speakers from development partner organisations including Global Fund, UNICEF and USAID and Vital Wave.

For the healthcare summit, we were able to bring together experts in healthcare sector from across the globe to share their unique perspectives and expertise on how all parts of the healthcare supply chain are coming together in support of patient safety. The speakers ranged from government and regulators - to pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers and wholesalers - to clinicians and other representatives from hospitals. Delegates had a unique opportunity to hear about national pandemic responses, opportunities for hospitals to implement global standards, clinical trials, accessing online product information.
